Review of Public Order by Sarah Pickering

Currently in showcase at London College of Communication, University of the Arts London is a range of designs that is a photographic exhibition of a constructed reality. The design that will be reviewed is called ‘Public Order’, made between 2002-2005 and by Sarah Pickering. It is a picture of a load of tyres on the road.

One of the strongest designs in the gallery, however it is not published in the booklet made for the viewers of the gallery to take home with them. It is very saddening for that to be the case as the viewer might forget the design.

The effects the artist has achieved through the choice and application of colour. It is very realistic, the colours blend well together and nothing clashes. The colours compliment each other.

The materials and processes used was forming the street with concrete, buildings and finally the tyres. The arrangement and photography is done right. It is vandalism but is great in the fake town of Denton. Could be a danger to a car accident with the tyres on the road like that.

Emotions of this design evokes a mechanics environment and places where cars that don’t work get stored.

What is successful about this design is the arrangement of the tyres, street and buildings. If it was real it would be a crime; as if a person woke up in the morning walked outside and saw his/her tyres off the car and saw the tyres displayed like that. I guess it does fit with the title of the showcase STAGING DISORDER. And if graffiti by Banksy is respected art, then so can this.

What wasn’t successful and is negative is the fact is a crime or a staged crime. Certain people at LCC viewing this would not like this and prefer the other designs to this one.

What could be improved is that it could be more real and done in a real place. It should not be structured in a polished way. Needs to be a bit more messy for it to be believable.

I highly recommend students, tutors and art lovers to view this gallery showcase.
